Alessandro Michele's Valentino 'Interferenze' Rome: New Rules for Contrasts and Roman Grandeur

A Baroque Rebellion in the Roman Skies: Contrasts Converge at Palazzo Barberini

Valentino has been an indispensable part of Paris Fashion Week since its Paris debut in 1973. However, for the Fall/Winter 2026/27 collection, Creative Director Alessandro Michele moved the stage to Rome, the city where Valentino Garavani founded the Maison in 1960. Held on March 12th at the historic Palazzo Barberini, this show, titled 'Interferenze' (Italian for "interference, overlap"), presents the clash between perfection and imperfection, Apollonian order and Dionysian chaos on the skin. Michele uses this moment to explore the tensions between tradition and disruption, elegance and exaggeration, and order and destruction.

An Aesthetic Inspired by Bernini's Unfinished Button

The conceptual starting point of the fashion show was the bust of Cardinal Pietro Valier by the famous sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini, displayed in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica at Palazzo Barberini. The fact that a button on the marble sculpture's garment had slightly slipped from its hanging was a brilliant detail that Michele interpreted as "the first aesthetic intervention on perfect beauty." Michele, much like Bernini, deliberately distorted flawless fabrics, asymmetrical drapes, and sharp forms, giving the garments a breathable life. The concept of Interferenze in the collection describes the clash of different aesthetic forces within the House of Valentino: Historical codes, tailoring, and decorative elements overlap, creating a tension between order and extravagance.

Runway Analysis: Womenswear — From Structure to Splendor

Womenswear combines structure and grandeur in a balanced way. Leather jackets and furs add a dramatic presence, while sculptural jackets and flowing dresses shape the silhouette. Pleated tunics, sequins, lace, and jewel-toned velvets are layered to create an intense ornamental surface. Transparency, embroidery, and soft drapes oscillate between elegance and theatrical excess.

Fuchsia and Emerald Green: A Chromatic Clash of Colors

Michele creates a literal "oxymoron" in his color palette. The solemnity of black and sand tones is suddenly interrupted by dazzling color blocks that set the runway ablaze. Especially the combinations of bright fuchsia and rich emerald green violate accustomed rules of the eye. This contrast serves as visual proof of the "Interferenze" concept in the collection's name.

Menswear: Restrained Poetics

Menswear, while appearing more restrained at first glance, is certainly not boring. Soft tailoring, high-waisted pleated trousers, and long coats create elongated silhouettes that move with ease. The color palette largely remains in anthracite, camel, and olive tones, enlivened by pops of color in scarves and knitted layers. Satin belts, draped collars, and textured fabrics bring Michele's decorative signature to menswear.

Valentino Red: The Silent Power of an Iconic Color

One surprisingly restrained element throughout the collection was Valentino Red. Since this show also paid homage to the late Valentino Garavani, one might have expected the iconic color to dominate the runway. Instead, red appeared only selectively: an silk skirt, a short knee-high boot under layered looks, Rockstud heels, an accent in menswear, and finally, the dress gracing the cover. This restraint makes the red even more powerful.
